Each year, Bro. Charlie Vincent and Tony’s mother, Sis. Earlene Middleton, present the scholarship to the deserving senior(s) during the annual KBCOC Youth Awards Day ceremony.
Anthony “Tony” Watson, Jr., born on January 21, 1974, was the sixteen year old son of Earlene Middleton and Anthony L. Watson, Sr. He lost his life on Wednesday, May 2, 1990 in an automobile accident. He was a sophomore at Monticello High School where he participated in football and baseball while maintaining above average grades.
Baptized at the Westside church of Christ in Fountain Hill under officiating minister, Bro. L.C. Griffin, Tony was actively involved in all youth activities while at Westside, and after the transition to Monticello with the church of Christ at Kennedy Boulevard.
To know Tony was to love him. He was a respectful young man with a quiet spirit. 1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Being a great example of a young Christian, the members established a $500.00 Memorial Scholarship in honor of Tony. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior(s) of the church of Christ at Kennedy Boulevard who meet the criteria set forth in the guidelines.
